  Clarification needed about US education system

  clarification needed about us education system and watchtower policy :-.

  we used to be slightly puzzled by some articles printed in the publications such as "young people ask - should i go to school?".

  because in england and most of the uk, school is most definately compolsory and enforcable by law up to age 16.. further education beyond age 16 is never refered to as "school" except jokingly.

  Further to Blondie's comments about the WTS concerned about how attending university places ones faith at risk:

  - This just shows how narrow minded the WTS is.

  - i.e University will damage a kid's faith, but supposedly learning a practical trade by means of on the job training will not . (I well remember the stern warning I received from the elders when I was about to complete high school - about what universities are like "these days").

  - The reality is, a young person will encounter just as many challenges to their "faith" while undergoing on the job training, as they will encounter at university.

  e.g Hard drinking workmates, pornography on open display, loose women (anything I haven't missed here?)

  I know - been there and done that!

  - Russell for reasons already stated.

  - Rutherford for his fondness of fine cigars!

  Whatever - what difference does it make. Both ruled an empire founded on BS!

  i remember spanking my son when we used to attend meetings and conventions because he cried and just wouln't sit still.

  i was told that he had to be disciplined so he would learn to behave and learn what was being said from the platform.

  now that i look back i realize that that was child abuse and i feel so horrible about it.do you feel guilty for spanking your kids during meetings and conventions?

  Expecting a child to sit still for two hours during a meeting - and for longer at an Assembly - is straight out insanity!

  And as for belting them for not sitting still .....unimaginable stupidity.

  All I can say is no wonder most JW youth give the whole thing away just as soon as they are able to.

  richierich posted something about how odd witness kids parties were and it reminded me of being reinstated.

  i never quite fit when i got back in.

  i would sit in the car groups and think...are these people for real?

  so it has become habit for me to go out of my way when driving to make sure i can give it the finger as i drive by.

  i especially like to do this on the way to one of my favorite bars, especially on meeting nights just so people who knew me can see me do it.

  i don't know why, but this has become a tradition of sorts.

  well, in our cong. service is now "expected" on Saturday.

  a few months ago we had a local needs part about supporting the cbs field service on saturday.

  it was given by a nice older elder, but what he said was pretty scary.

  he used all the phrases and logic that are usually used for meeting attendance.

  I don't know about Saturday service always being expected.

  In the last congregation I was with, I used to go out on Saturday mornings - but rarely on Sundays..

  For this, I got into trouble with the elders, who seemed to have the idea that Sunday service was somehow superior to that on any other day of the week.

  I could never see what the big deal about Sundays was.

  lately i've just been getting contacted quite a bit by depressed zombie like cultist's.

  i thought i would welcome being contacted by dubs after i da'ed but i actually really find it annoying!

  they all drop comments like "nothing ever changes.." "i don't really go to the meeting's that much.." "i'm just so bored.." "if i didn't have meetings i could go back to school" "brother shitbag is a jerk.. i'm so sick of him.." "the elders treat me like a child" blah blah blah.
